The Statesman Journal, based out of Salem, OR, published a story on efforts at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) to increase diversity in clinical studies. This story featured leaders from the Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute and several of our collaborators. There are links throughout the article on how to get involved in clinical research at OHSU.
2022 REKS Summer Series Recording: Regulatory and Ethics in Innovative Community Research The goal of this series is to highlight and discuss innovative community research, regulatory requirements, and ethical implications. When Beth Curles was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer in 1997, she told very few people. As an elementary school teacher in a small town in Georgia, she worried her community might harbor misconceptions about her diagnosis and treat her differently. For more than 15 years she quietly battled her disease, until her story brought her to Birmingham and to the care of the CCTS Clinical Research Unit
Digital technology can enable trial participation via an internet portal or smartphone app, eConsent, data collection directly via wearables and smartphones, ecologic momentary assessment, and other trial innovations. The Eureka Research Platform, a digital platform funded by NIH and housed at UCSF, supports digital trials and prospective data collection for funded researchers across the US
Mayo Clinic announced today that its Center for Clinical and Translational Science has successfully renewed funding for its research grant from the National Institutes of Health National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences for five more years. The funding award, totaling $48.2 million, is one of Mayo’s largest NIH grants, supporting research and education across the institution at that
A large randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial led by the National Institutes of Health shows that treating adults hospitalized with COVID-19 with infliximab or abatacept — drugs widely used to treat certain autoimmune diseases — did not significantly shorten time to recovery but did substantially improve clinical status and reduce deaths. Some COVID-19 patients experience an immune
The Washington University Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS) hosted their 4th annual Symposium and Poster Display on Friday, May 13, 2022. The theme “Making an Impact, Shaping the Future” focused on strategies to address equity and diversity challenges experienced by institutions across the national Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) network. The hybrid event
When scientific advances burst into the news, such as a new medication to treat COVID-19 or a new concept like CRISPR for gene editing, people get a glimpse of how a scientific idea becomes a treatment or a tool. But what's the full story? Where did that idea come from? What happens in the research lab before clinical trials begin? How is scientific discovery transformed into a potential therapy
A new video sponsored by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Translational Research Institute (TRI) is being used to help raise awareness among researchers about the inclusion of older adults in research. The five-minute video also has tips for helping researchers recruit more adults over age 65. The video was produced in collaboration with the UAMS Northwest Regional Campus
Objective: Agonism of protease-activated receptor (PAR) 1 by activated protein C (APC) provides neuro- and vasculoprotection in experimental neuroinjury models. The pleiotropic PAR1 agonist, 3K3A-APC, reduces neurological injury and promotes vascular integrity; 3K3A-APC proved safe in human volunteers.
Session recordings and slide presentations are now available from the 2021 REKS Summer Series Recording: Pathway to Decentralized Clinical Trials. The goal of this series is to discuss new developments in regulations affecting decentralized clinical trials. - Introduction to Decentralized Clinical Trials" featuring Nichelle Cobb (SMART IRB) - June 16th - Options for In-Home Clinical Trial Visits"
Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and its Yale Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI) has had great success addressing the issue of minority participation in clinical trials. Two elements that are key to the successes at Yale are electronic health record strategies and community engagement, through the Cultural Ambassador program (partnership between Yale, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church
