Senior Database Architect - University of Iowa ICTS Biomedical Informatics Core
The University of Iowa Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) Biomedical Informatics Core is seeking a senior database architect who acts as data architecture lead and solution consultant to grant and research programs. Also serves as service manager for biomedical data services and oversees various specialized data, database, ETL/BI, Master Data Management (MDM) and analysis services. Also manages a team of database analysts, DBA’s, ETL/BI developers, working with specialize biomedical data.
Duties to include but not limited to:
Lead the architecture, data modeling, ETL/BI (Extract Transform and Load/Business Intelligence) design, development and implementation for biomedical research tools such as Enterprise-wide research data sharing mart(s).
Lead ongoing development of the enterprise data warehouse for research (EDW4R), an aggregated data structure including patient data and various key extant data sources.
Lead technical aspects of linking the EDW4R with national research networks such as PCORnet, the National Covid Cohort Collaborative and TriNetX Research as well as regional data networks.
Contribute to the development and management of the ICTS Biomedical Data Request service, which provides researchers with secure and compliant extractions of data from clinical databases including patient medical records and billing.
Define a vision for moving beyond custom data extraction, migration and management services into a more automated project-specific model that could be replicated across multiple research studies.
Lead technical coordination activities between research teams, IRB, ICTS and HCIS, including data architecture design, capacity planning, project management, data analysis and staff management.
Assist as requested with connecting with peers at other CTSAs.
Contribute to presentations and publications for supported research projects.
ICTS Description: The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at the University of Iowa was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents in 2007 to support the work of investigators involved in clinical and translational science. Our mission is to accelerate translational science through programs to develop the translational workforce, to promote engagement of community members and other stakeholders, to promote research integration across the lifespan, and to catalyze innovative clinical and translational research. These efforts will lead to the development of novel therapies and healthcare delivery strategies, the integration of translational research and clinical practice, and, ultimately to measurable improvements in the health of Iowa and the nation.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Science or related field or equivalent combination of education and relevant application development experience.
Typically position requires a bachelor’s degree and 10 years of related professional experience. Higher level degrees may substitute for some of the years of experience.
Experience working with cross-domain, cross-functional diverse databases and systems with demonstrated experience in leading multiple concurrent projects and performing in a variety of different roles in the Software Development Life Cycle.
Expert/leader in the design and implementation of databases, data warehouse/mart implementations and data architecture.
Knowledge of Business Intelligence Reporting.
Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment.
Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff and students.
Demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment.
Expert/leader in developing and designing data strategies for data extraction, integration and implementation of systems, data warehouse and data marts.
Training in health science domain.
Extensive experience in the ability to lead, participate and moderate discussions with stakeholders for decision-making.
Experience with healthcare systems like Epic, GE-IDX, Cerner is desirable.
A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Science or related field is desirable.
