Research and Education Engagement Specialist

GENERAL PURPOSE:
With minimal direction and considerable latitude for independent judgment, the Research and
Education Engagement Specialist (REES) will utilize clinical research expertise,
communication skills, a community engaged approach and experience/knowledge of process
development to provide project leadership to the Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
This position will focus on the development and operationalization of a new tele-research
service and regional support for diversity in clinical trials for various short- and long-term
research programs. These activities will support workforce development and institutional
strategic initiatives that increase clinical research opportunities and empower new
investigators.

Supervision and Direction:
Reports to and is given direction by the CTSI Director of Research Services and is
accountable to senior team leaders according to specific service line activities.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and maintain a tele-research training program for researchers. Train
researchers on performing effective tele-research activities in compliance with human
subject research regulations and policies. Oversee and manage projects to engage community participation and promote
diverse representation in research across the Finger Lakes region:

Assist with the expansion of the Emergency Department Research Associate (EDRA)
Program to rural affiliate hospitals and partner with Arthur O. Eve Higher Education
Opportunity Programs at rural colleges in the Finger Lakes Region to recruit and train
undergraduates as EDRAs. In collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics Research
Ambassador Program coordinate special training for EDRAs to engage children and
parents in health research. Analyze data and prepare drafts of reports or
recommendations for publication, grant requests, etc.

Co-direct the training, coordination, and deployment of Community Research
Ambassadors to community sites to educate, recruit, and enroll older adults into our
local research registry and translational research studies. Coordinate maintenance of project resources, the preparation of data for budget requests and financial reports.
Coordinate expenditure controls.

Work closely with the CTSI Community Engagement (CE) Function team to assess
the Complex Care Center’s (CCC) patients’ attitudes and knowledge about health
research and foster collaborations with CCC clinicians to develop novel methods to
enhance patient research participation and identify research priorities. Assist in
remotely linking CCC patients to research on rare diseases and other relevant
conditions being conducted throughout the CTSA consortium.

Provide support and oversight for the dissemination of the Community Attitudes (to
research) Survey and subsequent analysis, reporting, and dissemination of survey
results.

Coordinate and support quarterly meetings of the Diverse Representation in Research
Committee; establishes agenda and direction in collaboration with the Population
Health Branch co-directors.
